On Tuesday and Wednesday, in a supervised visit at a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, Ashton Matheny was able to meet the baby whom authorities believe is the daughter of his girlfriend, Savanna Greywind, 22, whose body was found wrapped in plastic by kayakers in the Red River on August 27. Greywind’s parents visited the child on Wednesday. The baby girl was found in good health with neighbors last Thursday, after Greywind had been missing for eight days. The police have declined to disclose most of the details Greywind’s autopsy, but they have said they are treating her death as a homicide.

She’s my miracle baby,” Matheny said. “She was perfect coming in” and “It was the best feeling I’ve ever had.” A DNA test is pending to confirm the child’s identity, after which authorities plan to release her into Matheny’s custody.

Greywind was eight months pregnant when her relatives called the police to report her missing. According to court documents, the police first responded to a call at 2825 9th St. N. #5 in Fargo on August 19 and spoke to the man and woman who lived there, Brooke Crews and William Hoehn, but they did not execute the search warrant until August 24, at which time they found Brooke with a baby girl. Hoehn would later tell police that he had come home one day to find Crews wiping up blood in their bathroom and that she showed him the infant and told him, “This is our baby. This is our family.” Crews would tell the police that Greywind had given her the baby. Both told police that the girl is Greywind’s daughter, and a DNA test is being performed to confirm the child’s identity.

Crews and Hoehn are facing several charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Greywind worked as a nursing assistant at the Eventide Fargo senior center in West Fargo. According to Matheny, they had planned to name their daughter Haisley Jo. The baby girl found with Crews is currently being cared for by Cass County social services.

Matheny and Greywind had recently signed an lease on an apartment, where Matheny says they planned to live with their child. Now, Matheny says, he plans to move to the Spirit River Reservation northwest of Fargo to raise his daughter near family. He and Greywind are both members of the Spirit River Tribe.

“All I’m doing now is playing the waiting game,” said Matheny. “We have to go through the courts, the whole legal system. I wish I could have brought her home already. But they have guidelines to follow.”
