Teachers Ethics

There is hardly a person in the world that doesnt remember his or her teachers. That is because teachers, along with parents, are the people who give us understanding of basic things and who leave vestige in our mind and soul. There are different cases. Some may claim that no single teacher of his deserves respect or gratitude; others are convinced that teachers taught them not only school subjects but something deeper and really essential for life course. Anyway, teachers do leave vestige and arguments are mostly about whether that vestige is positive or not. To leave positive vestige requires a lot of efforts and inner characteristics from teacher, among which teachers ethics is one of top ones.

Great teachers are quite rare, in fact. Because one probably has to be born with rare characteristics and hold some special core so that to be called a teacher with a capital T. There are numerous sayings about teachers and their role in our life. This one is particularly vivid and truthful. A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others. Thus it is clear that a teacher gives so much to students that at times contribution is even hard to estimate. When we speak about good teacher, we always imply that such a teacher is ethically perfect, along with other virtues and professionalism as such. What does it mean? What are the components of teachers professional ethics? Firstly, a teacher should demonstrate respect to students and their viewpoints. Classroom is not a place for humiliation, ignoring or dishonoring. It is a place for educating, communicating and interacting. It is also of extreme importance that teachers were unbiased towards their students, especially when the matter is about children. When a young student feels that his peer is treated better because of say social background it may lead to frustration of the first and develop even into depression, reluctance to go to school at all. Teachers should not be prejudiced from social stance. Actually, teachers should try to be not prejudiced at all. Students are to be estimated according to what they demonstrate during classes, not according to their parents position or ethnic origin. A good teacher should be very accurate when communicating with students, no offences are allowed. It is great if teacher can find specific approach towards each student; however, it is not a quite wide-spread characteristic. Teachers should at least be polite and caring about their students. Thus they will evoke sympathy from students.

Teachers should serve as examples for students. And this very premise implies that teachers should be ethically perfect or strive to such a definition. Teachers should demonstrate virtues of humankind and, what is as well important, be friends to students. In this case, being a friend to students means mutual trust, respect and sympathy. Of course, much depends on internal characteristics of a particular teacher. Still, professional ethics is the same for all and it has to be followed. At least following teachers ethics (if no special interaction is set up) is a good beginning for fruitful relations between teachers and students.
